About Mike


Michael J. Ward, MGA, MIFireE, FACPE, has experience in fire operations, Emergency Medical Services, training, and academia.

Ward worked in an urban county fire and rescue department in suburban Washington DC, retiring as a Captain II. During that time, Mike was a fire science faculty member at a large community college and a state Fire Programs and EMS instructor.

Ward wrote Fire Officer: Principles and Practice for NFPA and IAFC, published by Jones and Bartlett. The fifth edition (2026) is available

Ward spent eight years as an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and the director of the Emergency Health Services program at a university medical center.

Ward was the EMS Director of hospital-based paramedic and transport services in New Jersey and Tennessee under a management services contract. Achieved and renewed Fellow (executive) credential with the American College of Paramedic Executives (FACPE).

Appointed to the NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications Technical Committee for the 2020 revision as well as the 2025 version of NFPA Standard 1020.

While working on a Ph.D. in Public Policy / Emergency Management, Ward continues to teach, write, and work for a variety of organizations, including adjunct faculty appointments at:
